Since Merck began activities in the LCD sector, the company has carried out toxicity and eco-toxicity tests on liquid crystals. In a Statement on Safety of Liquid Crystal Materials, Merck KGaA and the two other large liquid crystals manufacturers JNC Corp. and DIC (both from Japan) have committed themselves not to introduce any acutely toxic, mutagenic or otherwise hazardous liquid crystals to the market. The results of investigations ensure that any hazard to users or environmental pollution due to liquid crystal materials is minor, as long as proper recovery or recycling of liquid crystal displays is carried out.
